UK Maritime Industry
The maritime industry is bigger than just ships and as such there are lots of organizations and societies that you as a Cadet can be part of. We actively encourage Cadets to take part in maritime groups out with college. These will give you opportunities to learn more about the industry, stay up to date on current affairs’ and also network. Please see below that you may want to be part of, once you have enrolled in College you will be able to join.
The Nautical Institute
Offers free membership to Cadets for the duration of your training and up to one year after completion. Benefits include access to their monthly magazine that will keep you up to date with developments in the industry, opportunities to network with other members of the institute, access to free courses and discounts on NI publications. IMarEST – Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology
Offers free membership to Cadets for the duration of your Cadetship. Benefits include access to their member magazine, access to special interest groups, access to their library of marine journals and IMarESTs own tiles, access to technical lectures and events. HCMM – The Honorable Company of Master Mariners - Deck Only
Offers a free mentoring scheme to Cadets. The HCMM offers support, encouragement, advice and assistance to mentees as they progress through their career. Members of the HCMM volunteer to mentor cadets offering professional advice as well as support and encouragement through out training. Being an HCMM Mentee also provides access to technical information from HCMM and access to experienced maritime professionals. SMC already have a few cadets who are part of the HCMM scheme and are happy to provide supporting letters to support your application. Marine Society
The Marine Society aim to help seafarers release their full potential by helping them learn new skills, gain accredited qualifications and improve welfare. The Marine Society have an online learning platform that for a low price will give you access to educational courses that may support your learning as a Cadet. We suggest if you have been out of education for a while doing the Maths@Sea course as this will refresh your math’s knowledge before starting. To learn more use the following link: Marine Society
